Keeping my earrings

Trust and love are wonderful, but don't forget the earrings.
-Estée Lauder

I don't really wear accessories, save for a watch and earrings. The watch that I usually have on is a black Baby-G, which was bought with my first paycheck. I have a couple of other Casio ones, a red one from my parents and that's about it. Earrings, on the other hand, make a different story. I first got my ears pierced when I was 18, then when I was 19, 20, 23 and 26. I can remember the ages only because things happened and I wanted to remember them kind of permanently, so I got my ears pierced. Heh.

Anyway, earrings are usually the only accessories that I look out for when I'm shopping, especially in Bangkok. And since I go to the Land of Smiles quite frequently, I have amassed many, many pairs. *points above guilty* (Yes, earrings are on my not-to-buy-ever list.)

I usually keep my earrings in tiny ziplock bags, stuffed in a vintage chest of drawers. But out of sight means out of mind and I end up forgetting them. Quite recently, I visited my mentor's new apartment and she kept her earrings in little cubby holes in a drawer, which made them very visible. I haven't got an extra drawer but I have a happy place called Daiso. The above box cost SGD2 and though it can't contain all my earrings, at least I remember more of them.

(This frivolous piece is my attempt to KonMari my extremely cluttered room, though it's more tidying than throwing stuff away.)

Off to watch a Meryl Streep movie before dinner. She's my latest obsession. :D

SPOTTED: Christmas Watchin' with Zalora

Michael Kors is one of my few favourite luxury brands. I like that it is feminine, but not TOO feminine, classy and sporty chic *points to gorgeous, sleek black timepiece below and hyperventilates*.

For the history enthusiasts, Michael Kors was founded back in 1981 in New York City by Michael Kors himself. His mother was a model and that played a part in him developing a penchant for fashion from a very young age (He helped design her wedding dress at the age of 5!). He started designing and selling his clothes from his parents' basement and subsequently, had his very own space at a boutique from Bergdorf Goodman on 57th Street. There, he was discovered by Bergdorf's fashion director, Dawn Mello, and that led to the establishment of his very own brand. Some hiccups followed after that, but Kors managed to pick himself up and now, Michael Kors has a whole range of men's and women's wear, footwear, accessories, jewellery, fragrances and of course, watches.

I wear my watch everyday and without it, I feel 'naked' or like, a part of me is missing. If you or your special someone feels the same way, why not get a watch this Christmas?

Here are my 4 favourite picks!

  • Runway MK3247 Watch or also known as 'The Rose-gold Beauty'
This classic, elegant beauty will have you in knots with its stunning face, trimmed with sparking pave stones.
  • Runway MK5191 Watch or also known as 'The Black Beauty'
This sleek black and gold watch will make you the envy of every crowd.
  • Parker MK2249 Watch or also known as 'The Vintage Beauty'
This vintage timepiece brings you back to timeless sophistication with its sparkling pave stones and leather combination.
  • Slim Runway MK3275 Watch or also known as 'The Old Hollywood Beauty'
This classy and dainty minimalist adds a subtle glamorous finish to any look.

LOOKBOOK: MONOCHROME

Aforarcade jumpsuit
-

Jumpsuits are rather annoying when it comes to the loo, but some are incredibly classy and can visually lend some height. Haha. I save this pretty monochrome number for special events and days when I want to look a little more dressed up but still remain comfy. #lifeneartheequator #comfortiskey

LOOKBOOK: The Formal Baseball Tee

Forever 21 tee
-

I love stripes. Whether they are vertical, horizontal or diagonal, I love them all. They are simple, classy and looks more 'mature' than polka dots (Which I also love, but at a much lower magnitude.). This tee reminds me of a baseball jersey, but one that looks less like PJs. Heh. Anyway, just so you know, shopping online at F21 has been made a lot easier and cheaper (Lower shipping fees!) with 65daigou. I'm still waiting for my parcel but a post will be up soon! :D

And oh yay, my first lookbook since I had my hair chopped off (and for this year too.)!

SPOTTED: 5 Stylish Ways to Wear Your Kimono Top

If you break up the characters for 'kimono (着物)', it literally means a thing to wear. Traditionally, it comes in a long T-shaped robe with wide sleeves. The Japanese wear it for special occasions like weddings and tea ceremonies and they look very elegant and proper in it.

As a child, I have always wanted one ever since I saw Hello Kitty in a pink floral piece. Unfortunately, the real McCoy is really expensive and not quite practical in warm and sunny Singapore. Also, I really want to get mine in Japan but that's not happening anytime soon. I made a resolution to visit the Land of the Rising Sun only when I can converse in their language decently... Which is going to take a very long time. Heh. (Btw, I passed my N5 exam, yay! ٩(^ᴗ^)۶ )

Anyway, thank goodness for the creative designers who did a modern take on it and came up with the pretty and more wearable kimono tops. And they come in every possible colour and variation; floral, boho-chic, lace, fringe, chambray, chiffon etc. There's basically a perfect one for every outfit. But how does one actually wear it? Given that it's usually over-sized, one can end up looking a tad sloppy. Eeps!

Here are 5 stylish ways to wear your kimono top:

  1. Glam up your tank top and jeans combo with a patterned kimono. A chiffon one will flaunt your silhouette.
  2. Throw on a flower headband and wear a fringe kimono for the boho-chic look. Perfect outfit for a sunny Sunday afternoon.
  3. Seek warmth stylishly with a long kimono over your dress. Don't be afraid to go print-on-print!
  4. Add some shape to your kimono by belting it up. Go for a simple plain one that doesn't draw attention away from your pretty kimono prints.
  5. Jazz up your little black dress by draping on a floral or lace kimono à la Carrie Bradshaw from Sex and the City.

SPOTTED: The Versatile Maxi

Maxi dresses have always been associated with the hippie culture, when the free-loving girls of the seventies popularised the full-length, flowy dresses that reflected their innate uninhibitedness. Made of lightweight material and often teamed with sandals and loose and wavy beach hair, maxi dresses have withstood the test of time and is now part of a modern, casual attire.

Celebrities are also often seen in maxi dresses in their downtime - some even turning up for events in them! If that isn't a testament to how versatile the maxi dress is, then what is? (: And with maxi dress options aplenty these days, especially online, it's only a matter of which celebrity look we should steal.

Here are 5 celebs you might want to consider!

  1. Lauren Conrad
After leaving her reality TV show 'The Hills', the celebrity fashion designer continues sharing her style tips with us. Here, she pairs a turquoise ombre maxi dress with her trademark wavy blonde hair and sunny smile. Against her healthy California tan, the dress evokes all kinds of urges to hit the beach. If only we could do something about that length, though.

  2. Nicole Richie
A boho-chic list cannot be complete without Nicole Richie. The celebrity designer showed up at the Neiman Marcus Fashion Showcase in a red floral maxi dress by Kate Winter. Her sleek gold jewellery - which matches the shade of her hair - not only enhances the colour of her dress, but it also makes it look more formal for the event. Love the braid detail on the crown of her head too!

  3. Bella Thorne
Colour-blocking is everywhere now. Here, doe-eyed actress Bella Thorne dons a Shoshanna Mabrey maxi in this fresh, perk-me-up combination of orange and pink. By keeping accessories to a minimum - only a simple, golf bracelet - she allows the dress to take centre stage. And why wouldn't you? It's a stunning dress!

  4. Jessica Alba
From the premieres to the playground, Jessica Alba always keeps things fresh and relaxed yet glamorous with bright pops of colour, in comfortable cuts. Here, she does a quick coffee run in an orange maxi with a white sleeveless blouse thrown over. Her turquoise shades, messy bun and white cross-body purse keeps the outfit fuss-free and fun.

  5. Megan Fox
Since this is Megan Fox we're talking about, she doesn't have to reveal too much skin to look stunning. Even in a plain ochre maxi dress, the brunette beauty looks completely show-stopping. The only signs that she was going for a dinner date are the towering stiletto heels and statement jewellery - chunky bronze cuff and green jewel pendant.

Are you into the maxi dress trend? Which celeb look is your favourite? :D

SPOTTED: Mitju x K-POP

It has been a pretty long while since I last checked in here. ごめんね!The last 2 weeks of December was spent cramming Japanese because I decided to take up classes again (My 4th and final attempt!). I'll probably be journalling it either here or over at my (very dead) Tumblr, so as to keep my interest going. Especially in the face of confusingly difficult grammar. がんばって!

Anyway, back to one of the 2 main focuses of this blog - fashion, shoes in particular. I'm not really a shoes person because I really like unblistered feet. Heh. But I still do look at shoes because they can be oh so pretty! Also, as we ladies are very aware of, shoes can make or break an outfit. One rich source of shoe-spiration which we can look to for advice is, of course, the very bold and experimental K-pop industry. And we are in luck because homegrown Mitju just started offering designs similar to what our K-pop princesses don on their feet.

Here are 5 different styles of chic shoes for ladies:

  1. Jessica's casual, ladylike look
Former Girls Generation's Jessica goes for the sophisticated model-off-duty style with the tee-and-jeans combo, paired with a tweed jacket. Capped ballet flats are a classic and give off a girlish look. Here's a pair with a Chanel-ish quilted design from Mitju:

  2. Hyoyeon's sporty look
There are so many days when we just want to be comfy, especially in Singapore's unforgivable weather. I love red shoes (Prolly because of Dorothy from 'The Wizard of Oz' film.) and I like how Hyoyeon matched her red striped top with red sneakers. Here's a red nautical pair from Mitju:

  3. Krystal edgy's look
Unlike her sister Jessica who goes for a more mature and womanly look, f(x)'s youngest member, Krystal, opts for an edgier and darker style. She works a pair of brown loafers with printed skinny jeans and a dark grey jacket over a black T-shirt. Here's an unstated teal pair from Mitju:

  4. Victoria's sexy look
The outgoing leader of f(x), Victoria, exudes strength and femininity in every outfit. She shows off her incredibly toned legs in a pair of black wedges. Here's a grey embellished pair from Mitju:

  5. Seohyun's menswear inspired look
The youngest member of Girls Generation is usually seen in girlish dresses and skirts. However, she veers away from her usual style by opting for menswear-inspired pants and shoes. She still manages to keep things feminine with a bright red blouse and coat. Here's a sleek, stylish and still feminine pair from Mitju:

Which K-pop princess's style are you a fan of? And which Mitju designs do you like? :D

LOOKBOOK: Blushing Florals

Everlane tee, Missypixie Betina Floral Trumpet Skirt
-

This week was mostly spent recovering from Bangkok. Too much excitement left both my nose and throat a little sore. Still, I can't wait to go back there. Just last night, I was seated beside 2 strangers who were talking about my favourite country in the world (Besides Singapore, of course.) and it was really tempting to just join in the conversation. But I managed to maintain, thankfully (There are only so many embarrassing episodes that one can have at 25.).

The above photos were taken a while back, when my hair was still straight and pretty (It's back to being grass-like now. I'm really reluctant to straighten it again, so I got it thinned and layered. And now, I have no idea how to style it.). I decided to go both casual and dressy, just because the skirt was a pretty number and I was too lazy to go full-on dressy. Does the outfit look a little mismatched to you? :\

Anyway, the sister discovered Everlane tees a while back. They are 100% cotton, lightweight and slouchy, which makes them perfect companions for lounging around. Except that they are rather expensive. Definitely a want, and not a need.

LOOKBOOK: LOWRYS FARM x ZARA

Lowrys Farm striped top, Zara jeans
-

So many thoughts running through my head now that I can't decide what I want to talk about. The irrational bliss that I'm feeling from watching Korean dramas, my confusion over something rather minor and how I have been thinking about it so much lately (Yes, a sign that the hols are almost here. SO CLOSE. TOO CLOSE.), the fact that I'm always in-between things and am now trying to find permanence in my temporariness, the decision to embrace my very Chinese face and to make it even more Chinese with makeup, the eagerness to welcome the hols but also, the fearfulness of having absolutely nothing to do and wasting my time on earth away...

SO. I'm going to leave you with a song that I have been listening to. It doesn't exactly convey my mood right now but it lifts me up a little each time I listen to it. No matter how low I'm feeling.

-

Oceans apart and it's heavy on my heart
Roll and row but my rolling game too slow
I'm happy you know

I'm spending my time watching the ship and the globe
Why beauty's in the simple things
Your sweetness and your elegance
I'm happy you know

Paa pa pa paa pa pa paa papa pa paa paa

Oceans apart and I'm sailing on my dreams
Roll and row but my rolling game too wild
I'm lost in your smile

I'm spending my time watching the ship and the globe
Why beauty's in the simple things
Your sweetness and your elegance
I'm happy you know

Paa pa pa paa pa pa paa papa pa paa paa

LOOKBOOK: All wrapped up in a garden of fields.

Topshop tank top, Love, Bonito midi skirt
-

I have been literally wearing this Topshop tank top to death on the weekends. The cotton isn't paper thin and it goes well with just about everything, like this very pretty and cheery skirt by everyone's favourite Love, Bonito. It was one of those 'OMG, I MUST HAVE IT NOW.' item, and I would have got the shorter version, in green, if it weren't so short. Anyway, when I wear this, I feel like I'm in a cocoon of fresh grass, pretty blooms and sunshine. *blissful face*

I have been looking at a bunch of clothes lately, as I play 'Friends' in the background. Heh. Too many pretties, too many sales. And things get even sweeter when there are sales, on top of sales. Like these awesome ASOS and Zalora coupons which you can find at CupoNation. 2014 is coming to an end after all. We have worked hard, Christmas is just 2-months round the corner (And we know how fast time flies.)... Isn't it time to give ourselves a treat?

Or treats? :D

LOOKBOOK: Checkered Casual

Topshop checkered shirt and tank top, Espirit shorts
-

Since transiting into work full-time, weekends have become my lazy days. Well, not previously because I was trying to squeeze in so many activities like more work, ballet (which I quit and I really miss. ): ) and piano. I felt like I needed to grab every free time that I had to do something that I always wanted to do. Otherwise, I would just degenerate. But then, I realized that that left me with no rest. And weekends, which are meant for recharging oneself, became more draining than the weekdays because I was running all over the East and Central. Everything carried forward and I felt more haggard than someone who just started work should. Also, I had no time for friends (I'm SO SORRY.).

Now that I have freed up some commitments and I'm just left with one more big assignment, I think I have become a complete sloth (It has only been 3 days, really. But it feels like forever.); watching 'Friends' all day, flopping about like a dead fish on the brother's bed, drinking tons of water to offset the guilt from not exercising (Even though, I finished a bag and a half of chips while drinking water. But I did hit the gym last Thursday though!), surfing aimlessly and buying the most unnecessary things ever (like Rodin Oil. Gawd. It'd better be gold. *cries*)... It's like I can only swing between the extremes. I never rest in-between. Help. Moderation is the key to all things.

Anyway, I apologize. I digressed. So much. As I was saying, weekends have become the days when I dress seriously down. I'm usually in shorts and my swallows tee. But I've some dates to come and I thought I pull out some casual dressy wear. Whatever that means. Haha. (You can totally tell that my brain has shut down. At 12.43 pm. It has only been half a day. *buries head*) This checkered Topshop top was bought when my age still had a '1' in front of it (Sure miss those days when responsibilities were bite-sized.). I really love checkered tops but it's pretty difficult to find one that has the right colours. Some are too red, some are too blue... But this! Even though it isn't cheery, it has the 'farm' feel to it. Haha. I haven't found a nicer looking checkered top so I'm never throwing this out.

I think I just wasted 2 minutes of your life with this? Haha. But thank you, if you are reading this. (: Have a Magnificent Monday (while I go pull myself out of this rut.)!

SPOTTED: Current obsession - Nike

Back when I was a JC kid who spent evenings kicking balls on a muddy field (Now, it’s all synthetic grass. Bleagh!), I was completely obsessed with sports brands, one of which was Nike. Especially Nike. Their slogan 'Just Do It' can be interpreted in a gazillion ways but for the meek 17-year-old me, it meant grabbing every opportunity that came my way… No matter how tired I was, how lazy I felt and how many doubts my insides were casting upon me. My JC life was far from being smooth but it was a time when I started venturing out of my comfort zone, pushing my boundaries and just doing the things that I really wanted to.

So gawd knows how over the moon I was when Dad got me my very first soccer boots from said brand. They were red and loud and extremely proud to have 2 big white ticks emblazoned across their lengths. And then, both of my school and shoe bags were Nike, my socks were Nike, my water bottle was Nike... You get the picture. Heh.

Even though I have hung up my boots a long time ago and am no longer that brand-conscious, I swear my heart skipped a beat when I stepped into their Raffles City outlet recently to look for yoga gear. And... And the tiniest hint of the vines of obsession taking root. Heh.

Anyway, here are my top 5 picks from Nike at the moment:

LOOKBOOK: All Would Envy x Swallows

All Would Envy top and Zara skorts
-

Silhouettes of swallows are whimsical things and girls flock to such prints so much so that the online shops kind of overdid them. I mean, they are pretty much everywhere and I have got like 4 tops and 1 dress filled with black/ white shadows of these birds. Why not ponies? Or hippos*? Beats me but these nondescript (Like, literally.) birds seem to have magical powers that make me feel girly (But not too girly.) in a mature and classy way. No?

Anyway, All Would Envy is one of the few online shops that I frequent now. The clothes are simple and girly (In a mature way.). And my shopping experience has been nothing short of pleasant. Charlotte, the owner, always replies to emails promptly and seems really nice. For my first purchase, I asked for a meet-up and it was done conveniently at my train station. Also, I had the loveliest time chatting with the lady who came down to pass me my parcel. (:

The next launch is happening tonight. I have my eyes set on a gorgeous red faux-leather jacket and a pretty mint top. BUT I have gym so... Got to figure something out somehow. :\ Anyway, make a date with All Would Envy here at 8pm! Happy shopping! :D

*The hippo was my favourite animal when I was 7. Back then, my form teacher made us file every single worksheet we had. I hated punching holes in them because my hole puncher was tiny and I had to fold every piece of paper in half so that the holes would be precisely centralized. And 7-year old me thought how nice it would be to own a hippo because then, I could just place all my worksheets in its mouth, get it to clamp its teeth and have my papers punched all at one shot!

REVIEW: SGshop - Singapore Most Reliable and Cost Effective Taobao Agent

Ordering from Taobao hashad always seemed like an impossible task to me. Even though I underwent 14 years of Mandarin classes and sat for 3 major exams, my command of the language leaves a lot to be desired (Big sorry to all my 老师s!). BUT Taobao is THE place to go for affordable clothings... Actually, everything! That website has got everything that you need or want and it is a pretty big shame if language is your only barrier to them.

BUT BUT then, the Internet is brilliant and the people behind it, even more so. Introducing... *drum rolls* SGshop, an agent for several Chinese websites! And of course, one of them is Taobao. :D

I had the opportunity to give SGshop a try (Thank you Nicole from Street Directory!), so let me take you through the ordering process and show you just how easy, quick and fuss-free it is!

This is how SGshop's website looks like. You will first need to create an account (Just click on 'Register' on the bar at the top.). This takes only a couple of minutes. And then, the shopping begins. :D

There are 6 steps altogether:

  • Step 1: SHOP and pick your itemitems (Who am I kidding.) from various Chinese websites.
  • Step 2: Tell SGshop the URL of each item and submit your order.
  • Step 3: Bid some moolah goodbye (But it is for the 'greater good'. *nods*).
  • Step 4: SGshop deals with all the Chinese characters *shudders* while you sit back and chill.
  • Step 5: Bid a litte more moolah goodbye (Just a little more!) for shipping and delivery charges.
  • Step 6: Wait for SGshop to deliver your items right to your doorstep!

Step 1: SHOP and pick your item(s) from various Chinese websites.
Hop on over to Taobao and search for your items. Unfortunately, we can't escape the Chinese characters here but there is a thing called Google Translate (Thank you, Google.). Alternatively, just run a search on Taobao hauls on Google (My heart is yours.) and you should be able to find some links. :D

After spending hours picking your items and then, a few more hours re-picking them, copy the URL of each item's page.

Step 2: Tell SGshop the URL of each item and submit your order.
Head back to SGshop's website and paste the URL at the top. A pop-up window will appear where you can fill in the details of your item, like the colour, the size etc.

Once you have filled in all your items, proceed to 'Place Order'.

You get to choose how you want your items to be shipped, at various charges.

Step 3: Bid some moolah goodbye (But it is for the 'greater good'. *nods*).
For me, cash was topped up earlier so the amount was deducted from my SGshop account. You can make payment using ATM Transfer, Internet Banking or Paypal/ Credit Card.

Step 4: SGshop deals with all the Chinese characters *shudders* while you sit back and chill.
Once your payment has been verified, SGshop will go ahead and do the ordering for you. You can check the status of your items under the 'My Orders' tab. :D

Step 5: Bid a litte more moolah goodbye (Just a little more!) for shipping and delivery charges.
When your items have arrived at SGshop's warehouse, a SMS will be sent to notify you. If your items are out of stock, a SMS will also be sent. Proceed to SGshop eagerly, select your preferred delivery method and make payment for additional charges.

Step 6: Wait for SGshop to deliver your loot right to your doorstep!
On the day of the delivery, the delivery man will send you a SMS to check if you are home within a certain time frame. Besides home delivery, you can also choose to collect your items at MRT Stations during certain timings or collect them personally from SGshop's warehouse.

from here.

from here.

If you scrutinize the photos above, I had initially ordered a sweater but that went out of stock so I got another bag instead. I can't exactly remember how long the entire process took, because I waited for both items to arrive, but I think each took less than 3 days to reach SGshop's warehouse? The bags were packed splendidly and came in pristine conditions (No scratches, rough edges or anything like that!).

Overall, it was a really good experience shopping with SGshop. The convenience, the simplicity of the entire process and the fact that I didn't have to decipher complicated-looking symbols... I give it two thumbs up and I would definitely be using SGshop again to get my Taobao stuff. :D

P.S.: From December 1st to January 15th, SGshop will be providing free service fee. Do head on over to their website here to learn more about what SGshop can offer you. Happy shopping! :D

EVENT: Crabtree & Evelyn's 2013 Secret Garden Christmas Collection

Earlier this month, Crabtree & Evelyn held a private preview of their 2013 Secret Garden Christmas Collection. The whole place was transformed into the prettiest English garden, with the most gorgeous flowers. Walls were adorned with shelves of Crabtree & Evelyn products and they have been arranged ever so neatly according to collections.

The Secret Garden Christmas Collection is inspired by the wonder of an undiscovered English winter garden, epitomizing the essence of Crabtree & Evelyn. An array of gifts have been specially curated by the brand for loved ones of all ages and each is housed in limited edition keepsake boxes and bags.

Fans of Crabtree & Evelyn's Hand Therapy will take delight in the sampler sets of 3 and 12 tubes, 25g each. They make lovely gifts for family and friends... And yourself. You know, like place one in the office, one in the bathroom, one at your desk... Or one each in every bag that you own. Hehhh.

Here's Fel, looking as happy as a girl who has just been given candy. Also, she is one of my favourite people in my world, if you didn't know that already. :-D

And because I own so many hand creams, body washes and lotions, the highlights for me were the limited edition Christmas cookies, the gingerbread men especially! These cookies make perfect pairings with Earl Grey tea, Peppermint tea and Green tea, depending on your preference.

Love, Bonito top and Zara shorts.

Brought home 3 tins of Christmas cookies (But, of course!) and Mum immediately called dibs on the tins (But, of course.). Haha. Anyway, it was a really lovely evening spent. Thanks Cindy and Crabtree & Evelyn for the invitation! And thank you for reading! :-D
